War is an ideal setting in which to explore behavioral codes, and the mostly implied dichotomy of Shears' and Nicholson's drives the film for almost three hours to its neatly satisfying conclusion.
And to my eyes, this was one of the first full-color, CinemaScope epics that glimpsed the true potential of composition for a giant screen.
