One of the finest war films ever. David Lean is one of the best film directors of all time and this is his magnum opus. Amazing acting and story of triumph. When I think of Alec Guinness, I think of Colonel Nicholson, not Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Sessue Hayakawa was excellent as the sadistic Colonel Saito and his treatment of the POWs really hit deep with audiences. This film was not just a war film or a prison film, but it was also a timeless film as well.
Sure, it was definitely World War II and it was definitely the Burma Road. However, this film could be remade in any era with any group of POWs if the director had the leeway David Lean did. Lean is superb in this film once again.
Definitely deserved all awards and accolades. Amazing film.
