Review of The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) by Lord N — 27 Oct 2009
This is one of my favorite war movies and one of the best ones that has ever been made. it was extremely well executed. the plot was amazing and at times really brutal. although with what we know now, the torture that the characters endured in the film, as brutal as they could be, were watered down versions of some of the things that really happened.
(I mean, bamboo slivers under the fingernails? aaaaeeeahhhhhrmmmmuuuuh. it makes me flinch even thinking about it). The film held my attention for every second. it started with a bang and (no pun intended) ended with one too.
In the beginning, you watch the officers having to stand at attention until they collapse. that is pretty brutal. one ting that I think was odd was that Colonel Nicholson seemed to be on the side of the Japanese in building the bridge.
I mean, he seemed to get caught up in proving the superiority of the British over the Japanese. I mean, once the bridge is built, he sees the wire to blow it up and he BRINGS IT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE JAPANESE.
this causes the death of pretty much everyone. of course he realizes his idiocy "what have I done?" he says in the waning minutes of the film. the final lines of the film perfectly describe the final minutes.
"Madness, Madness" Final Verdict: right on. the perfect choice for Best Picture 1957.
