Review of The Bridge of San Luis Rey (2004) by Hìmär ? — 19 Jul 2008
Fell short of brilliance (like--didn't even make it halfway across the gulf) due to a disjointed script and a general dullness. This despite the all-star cast, incredibly poetic themes, and bounty of opportunities for both humor and tragedy.
This is all thanks to Thornton Wilder, author of the 20s novel. His characters are vivid and surprising, and he has some soundbites that are true poetry. While I did enjoy the movie, I agree with the majority of criticism on this one.
It could have been MUCH more interesting. They didn't quite deliver with any single character. In constellation, however, they make the film worth watching.
