Review of The Brides of Dracula (1960) by Scott S — 11 Jul 2009
I love Hammer horror movies,i was brought up watching them. They we're my introduction to the horror genre and i've always had a soft spot for them. The Brides of Dracula was Hammers sequel to their original 1958s Dracula and although the Count himself isn't in the movie,it's still a strong story with some great moments.
The great Peter Cushing reprises his role as Van Helsing, and his presence certainly ups the quality of the movie for me. He's so good in nearly everything i've seen him in. I love the way it's a direct sequel to the original,it was a brave decision not to bring Dracula back, but it works very well as continuation of the story.
As this was made in 1960,you don't get any naked flesh on display, that would come latter,in the 70s when almost all the Hammer Vampier movies where naked lesbians. You don't have much blood either,it's a very tame movie compared to todays standers.
But what it does have in abundance,is some great hammy acting and a wonderful plot that keeps you clued and interested throughout with this fantastic ending that finishes it off perfectly. This is a cracking movie in Hammers canon, and one I will happily watch again.
Great stuff.
