Review of The Bride with White Hair (1993) by Walt H — 22 Oct 2005
This one is pretty far out there. Evil male/female Siamese twins connected at the back have the rest of the clans on their heels. They employ Wolf Girl (later the Bride) as a killing machine, while they themselves have extraordinary psychokinetic powers. Wolf Girl and the young clan leader fall in love and have a doomed romance. Some but not all is made right in a spectacular ending where the male Siamese finally gets her off his back
Brigitte Lin, as Wolf Girl, is a Chinese superstar, at least back then and is the standout in the cast, with her lover Leslie Cheung somewhat laid back, partly in character. Tons of action and not the usual kung fuin' stuff either. I enjoyed watching it, usually, altho some of the whys and whats didn't quite register. The story could've been the victim of dumbass dubbing but overall the voiceovers were at least bearable and seemed to fit.
The DVD is definitely a foreign press. I thought it was defective at first until I did a finger dance on the remote and found some non-standard button controls to navigate around. The video and audio are just adequate. There is a making of but all the Chinese talky-talk wasn't doing a lot for me so I skipped through it. The DVD gets a 5/10 but this movie deserves better.
