In this movie's case less characters is more insight and development from each individual, and that is what makes The Breakfast Club awesome in its own right. I feel that it's great seeing the five main characters develop as people and getting to know each other a lot better.
Yes, High School is tough in terms of cliques and the status quo, but seeing these people open up of the hardships they face and eventually becoming is the best the movie has to offer. This is truly one John Hughes' best works I recommend seeing this.
