Review of The Break-Up (2006) by Hillary M — 16 Jun 2010
More true to life than your typical romantic comedy, this movie explores the dynamics of two selfish people forced to grow after a failed relationship. If you sympathize with Brooke's character, keep in mind, she isn't being honest with herself and Gary when she expects him to read her mind, in-short,"yes, you do have to tell your significant other 'what you want/ expect'" and not just leave your feelings/ desires a guessing game.
That's just juvenile and irresponsible. As for Gary's part, he is completely selfish about most things and pretty much waddles through whatever Brooke views as important. He has built barriers around his feelings and won't allow people to see his soft side.
Equally, childish and irresponsible. After the dinner-party, can we say her reaction is alright? No. This checking-out of Gary's has been going-on for sometime and never been correctly addressed by both characters.
In short, there are serious errors committed on both sides of the story; however, fortunately, the two walk away from the relationship better people. Nice.
