Review of The Break-Up (2006) by Stuart B — 11 May 2011
I find it quite irritating when a movie is marketed as something but turns out to be something completely different. This was launched with all the trailers suggesting it to be a Rom-Com, but there was no romance (in fact it was almost a movie of unromance), and pretty much no comedy either.
It was much more a relationship drama, and while it refreshingly broke a few stereotypes of the chick flick, ultimately it felt a little empty and half baked as it tried to obviously please the audience with pointless gags which attempt to alleviate the seriousness of it all.
By the time it reaches it's conclusion you find yourself exhausted by all the one-up manship and bitterness, so the tacked on ending feels a little fake (much like their relationship in the first place I suppose).
All just a bit tiresome really.
