Review of The Break-Up (2006) by Bradley W — 01 Dec 2011
I'll start by saying that I do not like this film. It tries to pass it off as a comedy, only to fail miserably. At least they got the anti-romance part right. The slow pace and boring script makes you wish the break-up would happen sooner.
First off, the plot is pretty much Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston bickering and fighting for majority of the running time. The entire problem is that it happens so often that its impact is diminished. It doesn't help matter when they're both so unlikable. You never feel like siding with either one of them, or that they were ever in love in the first place. Things eventually pick up later when one of them tries to save their relationship but by then, it is already near the end and the languid pace would have left the audience comatose from boredom.
It doesn't help matters when the script is 100% laugh-free, as if it was almost intentional. I'm actually writing this purely based on memory and even then I didn't find anything to laugh about. Again, almost all of the material is dedicated to Vaughn and Aniston fighting and shouting.
The only bright spot I can think of are the leads. They are able to bring drama and some modicum of emotion to the proceedings.
All in all, the movie sucks.
