Review of The Brave One (2007) by Sarah D — 05 Apr 2010
I was shocked by this film not because of its content but because of the message, it is ok to go around shooting young thugs on the street if your boyfriend dies. There is a debate in the film whether vigilante justice is right, on one hand there is Jodie Foster the other cop terence howard but if you look at the movie title, and also how all the cops apart from howard are portrayed, it is clear what side the film is on.
This is basically a cheap revenge exploitation thriller, think MS.45 or I spit on your grave but legitimised by the cast and director which is annoying because whereas those types of films are usually criticised for being trashy and indulgent whereas this isnt.
There is a post 9/11 theme running through the film but at the end of the day this is still a standard exploitation film wrapped in a Hollywood style bow, and the film itself is not paticularly memorable or special either.
