Review of The Brave One (2007) by Chinedu O — 08 Jun 2011
In 2007's âThe Brave Oneâ?, Jodie Foster plays a white woman who's fiance was randomly and brutally beaten to death by a bunch of latino hooligans, while they were out on a walk. She then searches for help from the justice system in the shape of a police detective played by Terrence Howard.
When that fails, she takes matters into her own hands, meting out her own version of Angry White Woman Victim Vengeance. Some moments are really tense, as you wonder if or when the detective will detect that the vigilante is a woman, one to whom he's spoken several times.
The restaurant conversation scene was reminiscent of the one between Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in âHeatâ?, though nowhere near as epic. I learned a few things watching this movie: 1: Jodie Foster is a fine actress, but she is NOT cute (I'm sorry); 2: We need more Vigilante Justice in our society (the subway scene was GREAT); 3: Revenge movies are cathartic.
.. that final scene was also AWESOME; and 4: New York is f*cking scary and psychotic as hell, and I don't know why anyone in their right mind would want to live there! âSafest Big City In The Worldâ?, my black ass! I can see why the few New York transplants I've met in California are so hard-edged, angry, and emotionally unbalanced.
Seriously, New York should really be its own little country, leave the f*cking rest of civilized society alone! Yes, I said the F word... not like anyone reads my reviews! Anyway, victim empowerment via handgun ownership, FTW!!
