Review of The Brave Little Toaster (1987) by Jonathan A — 14 Jan 2010
A group of household appliances lead by the film's namesake leave home to find their original owner. One of my favorite movies as a kid (I must've worn out the rental tape at some point from watching it so much), and still one of my all-time favorite Disney films.
Apparently, after some research, I found out this was actually an early indie effort under Disney from the people who would later become in charge of Pixar studios! Which may explain the touching story, engaging cast, and story elements that were re-used in "Toy Story".
The music isn't that bad either, in an 80s-pop kind of way, but the orchestral score is amazing and one of the best I've heard in an animated movie, elevating the film's animated simplicity to grand heights.
I think what makes this successful as a kids film is that it deals unflinchingly with a lot of the unfairness we experience in life, as well as rejection and neglect, which is important to understand at some point or another.
Although it has it's moments of highly juvenile melodrama, I still consider this one of the best movies by Disney from my generation.
