Review of The Brave Little Toaster (1987) by Gena D — 31 Mar 2013
This movie has so many layers! It's funny that as an adult I remembered the feelings connected with scenes before I would remember what actually happened in the scene. The movie doesn't have a lot of fluff or forced happy endings. The flower scene being a heart wrenching scene that wouldn't exist in most children's movies. You think the toaster is going to find a way to make the flower less alone. Perhaps find him a mirror, but no, he just looks back to see him wilt and die. And why do they do this? To show the toaster learning about comradeship. From then on he will be nice to blanket and the rest if his group.
As an adult we had almost as much fun making fun of the movie as we did watching it. For instance, they address the issue if power source only when it is convenient for the storyline. Such as with leaving the cottage or charging the dead battery. But when they are talking, lampy will have his light on while he thinks and taps his "chin" with his plug ...
Great messages about consumerism, abandonment, friendship, loyalty and more. Although, perhaps a little traumatizing at moments. Definitely a movie you should watch WITH your kids the first time they watch it!
