Review of The Boys & Girls Guide to Getting Down (2007) by Oliver C — 31 Mar 2008
I should probably warn people beforehand, that I have never "gotten down" to any great degree. With that said, this movie makes me want to. From what I can tell this guide seems pretty close to the truth of what goes on. But we'll see.
Also, this movie is actually pretty helpful, although it will make you want to swear more in, just about everything. I don't necessarily approve of this kind of lifestyle, but let's get down to specifics.
The structure is in a guide format, with a loose conglomerate of characters that flow through the different "Chapters", or segments of the movie, all taking place over the space of a night. The good point of all this is that it genuinely tries to assess all parts of the experience, for instance, differentiating gender-specific behaviors in specific situations, and acknowledging the "sketchy", and lawbreaking side of this kind of hipster lifestyle.
In short, anthropology has never been this amusing, especially the digression about bouncers, with their "hot dogs". Just watch it, I promise, its short length and lessons for you non-hipsters will be hilarious and educational.
