Review of The Boy and the Beast (2015) by Minustephen — 09 Mar 2016
For anyone wondering, you must see this film in subtitles. Checking it out dubbed really skips the emotional depth that is possible from The Boy and the Beast. However, looking at the film as a whole, it's truly wondrous and great escapism material.
Despite a slow first act, the film gets really intriguing from the second act, on through the finale. Intro parts that try to connect for touching end sequences get lost a bit due to this sluggish start, but Hosoda is a man of great imagination and pathos, with "Beast" fulfilling his checklist nicely.
It'll be hard to find a film in 2016 that's as heartfelt and charming. My biggest criticisms of the film lie with the dub, but even in spite of those issues, "Beast" is still hugely enjoyable, albeit maybe aimed at a younger audience in its translation.
Try to see it subbed for the best emotional resonance, but don't skip it if dub is all you got! The set pieces are really fantastic and Hosoda always knows how to deliver a finale.
