Review of The Boy (2016) by Shawn P — 24 Jan 2016
The Boy doesn't bring anything new to the horror genre, and for the most part it isn't that great of a film, but The Boy is absolutely okay.
The acting is pretty above average for January dump horror and the cinematography is absolutely beautiful. The minimal Bear McCreary score is also haunting yet doesn't over burden the film.
The plot though is a little overburdened, always facing the audience in one direction, giving us backstory and plot cliche plot developments, while never quiet developing any one thread naturally. Until we get to the final twist, which for some will come out of nowhere and others will have seen it coming.
Though The Boy is overburden with plot and some parts are a bit of a slog the stuff that is good is actually quiet good and the twist ( whether you see it coming or not) is still pretty fun. The Boy doesn't get that campy charm of a bad horror movie nor does it have the dread or thrills of a great one. The Boys biggest detriment is that it is just fine.
