Review of The Boy (2016) by Norberto A — 07 Feb 2016
'The Boy' completely exceeded my expectations. A fantastic little horror film that keeps its focus on atmosphere and the unsettling tone of creepiness instead of gore, cheap scares and violence.
It stands out from all the other horror films about dolls, because its much more odd, minimal in its approach and eerie. Its style and unraveling story reminds me of the much more classic horror films of the late 1950's and early 60's.
This is definitely William Brent Bell's most accomplished and satisfying film to date. The direction, cinematography and score are all impressive here and the film is visually gorgeous. Lauren Cohan does a wonderful job as the young woman who is left alone in this massively gorgeous gothic mansion with a strange life size porcelain doll of a boy that she has to take care of as if he was a real boy with a list of specific rules to follow.
Her reactions to many of the situations in the film are relatable and hilarious at times. I had a lot of fun watching The Boy. It creeped me fuck out and had me in suspense until the credits rolled. The more I think about the ending and its revelation, the more it gets under my skin and I love it.
It's not groundbreaking but it's definitely worth a watch.
