The stop-motion animation is technical mastery and the craft truly adds personality to every film it is used in. Unfortunately, 'The Boxtrolls' suffers from a story that is not too compelling and tries to be too peculiar for its own good.
There is a message hidden in there somewhere and it does come out pretty well by the end, but it is often diluted in dumbed down silliness. Sure, a laugh is great in any movie, especially in a kid's movie, but even younger viewers should not be spoon-fed chuckles.
The movie benefits from great voice acting by Ben Kingsley and Isaac Hempstead-Wright. It is visually stunning, zany, and mildly entertaining, but 'The Boxtrolls' is one to save for Netflix.
