Review of The Boxtrolls (2014) by Audrey L — 18 Oct 2014
Laika raises the bar to staggering new heights with Boxtrolls. The stylization is mesmerizing, with an emphasis on showcasing the hand-made quality of the painterly colors, moody lighting, and lavish textures.
I felt it's premise was original, yet nostalgically familiar. But, my favorite aspect of the film was really how truly peculiar it was. There was no hint of restraint on the disturbing or unorthodox- just what I've wanted children's movies to return to: unfiltered creativity, in all it's unexpected, inappropriate, and memorable ways.
