Review of The Boxtrolls (2014) by Freeson W — 12 Nov 2014
After leaving the movie theater, I had the distinct sense that I had watched something very beautiful, but that was a little more empty and a little less thrilling than the rest of Laika's work. Stop motion animation is always gorgeous to look at, and "Boxtrolls" is no exception.
The story is entertaining, but I wish there were a little more depth. In "Boxtrolls" we are presented with the protagonist, Eggs, who was abducted and raised as a Boxtroll - a group of trolls that wear boxes that roam the city at night collecting refuse and castoffs.
Snatcher, the Boxtroll exterminator, is determined to kill them, and one-two-three we have our conflict. It's just a little predictable, and I wish we delved deeper in to Eggs's character and the conflict he faces as a human and a boxtroll.
Ultimately, still a good film, but lasting that final polish in the story.
