Review of The Boxtrolls (2014) by David L — 13 Jan 2015
It is often too silly, the plot is predictable and very similar to Tarzan and it is the most childish and definitely the weakest Laika film to date, but The Boxtrolls still manages to be quite a solid little flick thanks to exquisite and very appealing stop-motion animation and the two henchmen characters who are very refreshing and often very funny.
The voice cast (mainly Elle Fanning as Winnie) is too weird and it quickly becomes a distraction, but the film is sweet, especially for children, the animation is quite artistic, the world-building is solid and it an all around fun experience.
It is nowhere near the quality of Paranorman and Coraline, but it is still a warm, old-fashioned and very effervescent movie in its own right.
