Review of The Boxtrolls (2014) by Mark L — 22 Jan 2015
Where are the women? Females are no more then emotionless, meaningless dolls and one rude little girl.
While the animation was spectacular, and the moral at the end of the story quaint, that did not make up for the movie's heavily misogamist themes. Female characters are no more then background noise in this movie. The only female character featured, while self empowered, was still portrayed as generally rude and inconsiderate. While this alone would not be an issue, the fact that all of the other female characters are either glossed over or outright ignored made the negative and/or dismissive portrayal of women in the movie a little much. The movie focuses extremely heavily on male characters and gave import only on fathers. The lack of any female of any worth, outside a single obnoxious girl, was both irritating and grating on the nerves. Heck, even a female troll would have been accepted.
