Review of The Boxtrolls (2014) by Hatem A — 01 Feb 2015
2.5/4.0.
The latest outing from stop-motion animation studio Laika is probably their weakest effort to date (compared to "Coraline" and "ParaNorman") but is nonetheless entertaining. The problem is that it will appeal more to kids than grown-ups with a bit of an in-your-face message and expected ending. Still, the movie looks great and its voice cast of English actors and Victorian setting works. Set in the 1800s in the fictitious English town of Cheesebridge, the movie centers on Eggs (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), an orphaned boy raised by the Boxtrolls, who are believed by the townsfolk to be evil child-kidnappers by Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley) who wants to exterminate them to get a White Hat from town's leader Lord Portley-Rind (Jared Harris). Elle Fanning voices Winnie, Portley-Rind's daughter who is Eggs' first human friend. Based on the 2005 novel "Here Be Monsters!" by Alan Snow. Nominated for 1 Oscar: Animated Feature.
