Review of The Boxtrolls (2014) by Valerie P — 14 Jan 2015
The Boxtrolls scores another win for Laika. Even if it's not quite as ambitious as Coraline and ParaNorman, the film still delivers in purely off the wall family entertainment. Ben Kingsley is great as the creepy villain Snatcher who has rather nasty reactions to cheese.
The film plays with important themes such as class conflict and is simultaneously charming and grotesque. Though some of the material is a bit much at times, especially for kids, The Boxtrolls is one of the best animated films of the year and proves Laika is a refreshing animation studio that deserves more recognition.
Rating:83.
