Review of The Boxtrolls (2014) by Joan W — 10 Oct 2014
It's a shame when an animated film, especially one involving stop-motion (because it isn't utilized all that much anymore), doesn't do as well as you think it should. The Boxtrolls comes from the same group of filmmakers that created Coraline and Paranorman, and even though I didn't care for Paranorman all that much, I loved this one.
I think you have to do a couple of things to enjoy this movie properly before watching it. You have to put yourself in the mind of a child, because the inner child in you will enjoy this the most, and you have to remember that this isn't a movie filled with cheap jokes or uninteresting characters, because it isn't.
It's an amazing piece of work that entertained and delighted me, and kept me laughing throughout. I don't understand how people don't get the humor in this film, but whatever. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
All the performances are excellent and the stop-motion animation is some of the best that you're likely to see, especially for this day and age. Your kids will love it and you will love it. Please check it out.
