Review of The Boxer (1997) by Paul T — 21 Jan 2009
Strong and moving film which beautifully documents the myriad ways in which those who are swept up in an ongoing conflict are affected by it. Daniel Day Lewis as the boxer of the title, a former IRA member trying to rebuild his life in strife-torn Belfast after being released from jail, is incredible, anchoring the film with his raw and intimate portrayal.
The fragility of his relationship with Emily Watson's character, and indeed most of the relationships within this violent landscape really draw you into this harrowing but somewhat hopeful tale.
