Review of The Boxer (1997) by Kevin M — 07 Jan 2010
I rented this for one sole reason: Daniel Day-Lewis. He is one of my absolute favorite actors and I am constantly blown away by his performances. However, The Boxer fell flat, for me. Even Day-Lewis couldn't redeem this movie.
Sure, he did a good job but I didn't feel his role was any real stretch for him and, therefore, did not give him a chance to really shine as the actor we all know he is. Emily Watson is somewhat annoying to me, so her presence in this movie didn't help by liking it either.
The plot was overall pretty boring and drawn out, for me, and I just remember wondering when it would end. Nothing ever seemed to really happen throughout this film and I kept watching it, in hopes that it'd get better, but it just didn't.
At least not for me. I still remain a huge Daniel Day-Lewis fan but he definitely disappointed me with his choice of movie in this one.
