Review of The Box (2009) by Zack S — 28 Sep 2011
The Box is such a criminally underrated film! Donnie Darko was always going to be a tough movie for Richard Kelly to top but The Box is worthy competition. As trippy and bizarre as it is, it's one of the trippiest you'll ever see, it's also quite engaging as well.
I thought it had a deep meaning that many won't see, but that's the point. It's a movie that really makes you think even if a lot of it doesn't make sense. I really appreciate that's the direction this movie took.
As opposed to other horror films which are so predictable, it's laughable. The Box is an exception however as it will keep you wondering all the way to the end. Which I also thought was brilliant.
Definitely the perfect kind of ending for this movie. Of course, I haven't even mentioned the cast yet. Who I believed all gave superb performances. This might be just me, but I think labeling this is as a horror movie is actually quite stupid.
This film is really a mind-game/thriller that will require you to think. In a way, I kind of feel bad giving this five stars because I'm well aware of the negativity it has received and I can see why people would hate it.
However, I still thought it was a work of art. It's not going to be to everyone's liking, but I loved it.
