Review of The Box (2009) by Jordan D — 31 May 2013
The film has a dryness typical to dark comedy and a staleness usually not unexpected in art-house film. But it is neither this nor that. Fittingly, when gone through "afterlife" and was asked to describe "that place", the protagonist uttered, "It's somewhere in between, either here or there.".
That sentiment sums up this peculiar film started off with a great premise and dragged on to finish. It needed better editing that is for sure.
So human nature is tested, but "why a box?" So there is a consequence only one's conscience could reveal before the action bearing such consequence is carried out. It is therefore, never about altruism or sacrifice, it is about being afraid of the consequences. Think about it, it is not about getting one million dollar spare cash, it is about needing to pay for a crime of mudering someone by dying so your child won't live in darkness and silence (or is it eternal damnation).
I could not rate it higher because the film in attempting to achieve more than it can chew end up choking a bit.
