Review of The Box (2009) by Corey M — 31 Mar 2015
I liked the idea from the trailer so that got me to go see this movie. After seeing it, I cannot say it was very enjoyable and I will likely not see it again. Without giving away too much I thought the characters reactions to what was happening was just too hard to believe. I tried, I wanted to believe people might act that way but when I really thought about it the reactions just felt too fake. *semi spoiler alert* - If I woke up and found a giant rectangular cube of water with my significant other inside it floating two feet directly above me in mid-air, I would freak the hell out! Like most people would. Granted the characters had gone through some crazy stuff already by that point but come on. I certainly would not do what Diaz's character did which is just open my eyes and be like 'oh whats this floating above me? It looks interesting, I think I will just remain perfectly calm and poke it with my finger.' *end semi-spoiler alert*.
Besides those unbelievable reactions is the muddled confusing plot. I am all for complex plots but only if I can figure them out completely or they are explained completely by the end. If I am left confused because not all the information was given to me then that is frustrating and makes me not enjoy the movie. I understood some things like why it was happening but the how is still a mystery to me as not enough information was given to explain it. It was good enough to watch for 2 hours but not good enough for me to revisit it.
*This is an update in March of 2010 so 4 months after this initial review. After reviewing the 60-70 movies I saw in 2009 and thinking about them and this one more, I have bumped my rating of this movie down from a 4 to a 2. It really has very few redeeming qualities and I recently chose it as my pick for the worst movie that I saw in 2009.
