Review of The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) by James S — 23 Jul 2015
Now we're getting somewhere.
Paul Greengrass has finally delivered a film with a more engaging plot, better action sequences, and finally an ending that actually delivers on the narrative he's been jerking around with for three movies.
This film finally starts to explore how Jason Bourne became to be. Although it makes heavy use of the 'sudden flashback' technique, the story is still well-done. The character has so much depth now, and his actions are finally starting to make sense.
The action is well-timed with the plot, even the Obligatory Car Chase Sequence. While the film still suffers from a lack of light moments, there is a better mix of tone here, and Matt Damon's acting elevates this.
The supporting cast are all solid. It's great to see Julia Stiles' character get a meatier role here, and Joan Allen does well also. David Strathairn played his part well, showing his uncompromising dedication.
A welcome improvement over the previous two installments. They saved the best for last*.
*Yes, I am aware they made more after this.
