Review of The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) by Jonathan B — 01 Sep 2016
Ultimatum completes the hat trick of the Matt Damon Bourne trilogy, ranking among the strongest second sequels ever made. The plot may be the weakest of the three, as it essentially consists of Bourne on the run the entire time from more corrupt CIA baddies again, but the foot chases/pursuits are some of the most impressive you're likely to see.
There is a little retread of story beats similar to the first two films, but at least it plays around a lot with chronology and overlap with Supremacy in an interesting way. Even though it was the most critically acclaimed of the franchise and finished with the highest box office, I was surprised to find Ultimatum holds up the least of the three.
It still obviously is quite good, it just doesn't distinguish itself as much in retrospect, which I didn't remember feeling the first couple times I saw it when it was originally released.
