Review of The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) by Stephen Z — 07 Dec 2015
If there's one thing to be said about the Jason Bourne films, it's that they are consistent. They always provide excellent action sequences, a great performance from Matt Damon, and (unfortunately) a plot that doesn't live up to its potential. This is true more than ever in Bourne's third outing, "The Bourne Ultimatum".
Like "The Bourne Supremacy", "The Bourne Ultimatum" fails to capture the spark that "The Bourne Identity" had. The action is what saves the movie. "The Bourne Ultimatum" features some really kinetic action - some of the best of the franchise - especially a suspenseful scene at a London train station and an incredibly intense chase in Tangier. However, while this action is spectacular, the plot is more aimless than ever; I spent half the movie wondering why Bourne was doing what he was doing? On top of that, we FINALLY get the answers about Bourne's past that we've waited three whole films for, and the payoff is disappointing and predictable; it's something we've seen a million times before.
At this point, I think it's safe to say that if you've seen one Bourne film, you've seen them all. Just like the previous entries, "The Bourne Ultimatum" is a decent action film, though hardly satisfying for those seeking an intricate plot.
