Review of The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) by Alex A — 04 Jun 2016
It use to be a rarity if a sequel would hold its own against the original but in recent years it is now much more common. The third film in the series is now the best entry, the sheer focus of the story is relentless.
Matt Damon returns to he's best role and gives yet another solid performance. He keeps the film from losing that central figure which we relate to. The support characters are strong and give the film great depth which is important in a third film scenario but they never take away from the lead character.
Greengrass is a worthy action director and brings some solid action scenes. The car chase like first and second is just edge of your seat action delivering something special. The gritty realism of the shaky camera may put some people off but it puts you in the middle of the action instead of the sidelines.
The screenplay is a maze just like the first and finally brings him the full circle from the first. I feel Bourne has finally concluded he's story and hopefully won't continue beyond this point. This final acceptance of who he was allows the character to move on.
Overall this film is the top of the series and allows an ending which could have Bourne re enter down the track.
