Review of The Bourne Supremacy (2004) by Saban E — 07 Aug 2012
With the second movie in the Bourne trilogy, we're given a sequel that's just as exciting and badass as the first one. In this one, Jason Bourne is living with his girlfriend from the first movie and they seemingly have a normal life.
However, Bourne is having nightmares about his life as a CIA assassin and he still ends up being targeted. Within the first 20 minutes or so of the movie, Bourne's girlfriend is killed and now Bourne is out for revenge and finding out who tried to kill him.
A simple plot, but also effective. The great thing about this movie is that it perfectly balances out the action scenes with the non-action scenes, just like with the first movie. The dialogue is well written and keeps you engaged in what's going on and the action scenes are as intense as ever.
The pacing is really wel done and there's not a point in the movie that had me wanting to throw my remote at my tv out of pure boredom. This Bourne movie also dives deeper into Jason Bourne's motivations and it does a really good job of making you root for Bourne all the way through.
Matt Damon also does great in this movie. To me, he actually plays a part in making the character likable because, I mean c'mon, it's Matt Damon. He's an underrated badass. The director of the first movie was Doug Liman, but he's replaced by Paul Greengrass in this one.
Greengrass was an awesome choice for this movie. He has a really good sense of spectacle that fits in this movie really well. As I stated earlier, the action scenes are just as intense as the first movie's action scenes, but during these action scenes, there's an absurd amount of shaky cam.
The first movie had shaky cam, but it wasn't as bad, it wasn't exactly all over the place. But this movie makes it seem like the cameras used to film the movie had Parkinson's disease. The shaky cam felt really overdone and I know the director wanted it to feel like the audience was actually there with Bourne, but instead I had to pause the movie and let my headache pass.
There really isn't a lot that needs to be said about this film except that it's a really well done sequel with great action, an awesome cast, it was well written, it had the same intrique level, minus the fact that some scenes made me feel very nauseous.
It's a kick ass movie, but the third one brings things to a new level.
