Review of The Bourne Supremacy (2004) by Seth S — 06 Jan 2013
Not up to snuff with the rest of the trilogy, but The Bourne Supremacy is still better than almost any action movie around. One thing, Paul Greengrass's shaky cam style diminishes some of the action scenes. There is a great fight between Bourne and another assassin that is hard to make out because of the shaking. Not a good way to shoot action.
Supremacy continues the story of Jason Bourne. He is living under the radar with his girlfriend Marie. But an assassin is sent to kill Bourne, he fails at that, but succeeds at killing Marie. Bourne is enraged, and goes on a revenge filled journey back into his past.
Matt Damon continues to shine as Bourne. Gone is his hint of childishness from Identity, now he knows who he is, and he is not happy. Joan Allen plays a government agent hunting Bourne. She is very solid, and improves as the movie goes along. Karl Urban plays the main baddie, Kirill. He doesn't speak often, but he is a worthy opponent to Bourne. Julia Stiles role as Nicky is expanded here, and even more in Ultimatum. She is great in that she may be this intelligence agent, but she still has no idea what Bourne will do next.
Overall, this is the weakest in the series. Greengrass gets a handle of the shaky cam in the third, but here it seems like he's almost just testing it out. The action, acting, and story continue to be excellent, just the shaky hand of the director detract from this movie. Still, this movie is amazing. It seemed better too me on second viewing. A very solid continuation of the story.
"You killed Marie. The moment you got into her car. The moment you entered her life, she was dead." 8.5/10.
