Review of The Bourne Identity (2002) by Stephen Z — 26 Nov 2015
"The Bourne Identity" is a different kind of spy thriller. It is completely different from the Bond films or the Mission Impossible films. The ever-present sense of mystery and conspiracy as Bourne searches for answers make all the difference. The action is also highly innovative and suspenseful, although the ending is kind of anticlimactic when compared to the exciting action that precedes it.
But the greatest asset of "The Bourne Identity" is its lead, Matt Damon. Damon takes complete control of the screen. Daman has proven himself a capable action star in several ensemble action films, so I'm glad to see him get the chance to lead his own film.
My biggest problem with "The Bourne Identity" is that it doesn't feel like it completely resolves Bourne's story, and I'm going to hold the film accountable for that. It doesn't fully explain how he got his amnesia or how he got his skills, and with Brian Cox's character still alive, it's still likely that he'll be pursued. Even if loose ends were intentionally left for a possible sequel, there should have been more closure than there is.
Sequel of no sequel, "The Bourne Identity" is an excellent action film. If you are looking for a film that has just the right amount of action, mystery, and suspense, "The Bourne Identity" is the perfect film for you.
