Review of The Boss Baby (2017) by Jake M — 19 Aug 2017
The Boss Baby (2017) - is...well...um...weird. I know Dreamworks has been known to come up with some insane ideas but this idea really messed with my head and I was left feeling very numb after it was over. It's not Dreamworks's worst movie nor is it anywhere near great. However, while there were many things I found to be a bit much, I did think this movie had a couple advantages.
The Story doesn't seem to flow very naturally and a lot of the pivotal moments in the adventure don't seem to fit into place when seeing the full product. On top of that, some of the pacing feels so fast that it's seems kinda desperate to catch your attention. it throws so much insaneness that it doesn't really take time to really let any of the emotions sink in. On the bright side, I do like what the movie is trying to do. I can tell that Dreamworks was trying to tell a nice story about the acceptance of brotherhood and there are a couple charming and uplifting scenes that prove it. I also think some of the ideas for the movie can be kinda creative sometimes especially when our main character visits Babycorp industries our taking a glimpse into Timmy's imagination.
The Characters are honestly really forgettable and even though some of the characters have good voice talent behind them, they don't really succeed at leaving an impact. The Boss Baby himself might be the rare exception however as Alec Baldwin does a very decent job playing the character. Timmy is also a decent character. I do like how he has an active imagination and how it's a big part of his life but sometimes I wish they could have toned it down to let the emotions take advantage of what he's going through. I also think some more chemistry between our two main protagonists would have been better to really show the development of their acceptance. The other characters are pretty forgettable both in names and personalities. They aren't awful or done super poorly but they really don't have anything much to offer.
The Animation isn't really anything to brag about but sometimes it can show some off some creative ideas and a few funny gags. Whenever the movie goes into the imagination sequences or Babycorp industries it can be nice to look visually appealing sometimes. Most of the time is spent in the so called "real world" that I feel like we don't really get enough time to really know the other places the movie visits. The characters and backgrounds for the majority of the movie are serviceable but not anything special to look at.
The Music is also nothing to brag about but it does create nice and innocent melodies. There's nothing that really sticks out whenever I hear the orchestra track. Even the inserted copyrighted music doesn't seem to really help matters either but in the end the music did it's job and it did what it could.
I personally find this movie to be kinda okay. It had a couple funny moments as well as moments of charm and heart but I didn't feel like anything in this movie really stuck with me. I know that everyone was trying and I can definitely tell that effort was put into this movie but I really didn't feel invested in what was thrown at me. It may be enjoyable for some people but it really wasn't for me. (C).
