Review of The Boss Baby (2017) by Not So L — 17 Apr 2017
SPOILERS AHEAD.
This film was certainly something to behold - and not in a good way. With many a violent scene, perverse image and a plot lacking in the sense department, this film both horrified and amused me (purely because it was so dreadful). There were many questionable messages within this film, that I would not be happy with my child being subjected to. For example: a baby repeatedly stapling a bunny's head as if it was torturing it; serious violence against infants that magically have no consequences at all; a baby in suspenders (a little stripper-like) and acting rather provocatively, and psychedelic drugs being offered on pacifiers. One thing that really stood out was the blatantly-obvious-yet-never-mentioned mental illness that the main character (the older brother) suffered with. His extreme delusions and hallucinations not only made the plot hard to keep up with, but made you worry for the poor boy's mental health. He witnessed his baby brother being pushed into a main road (with no reaction or remorse, by the way), only to appear a few moments later upstairs. If this affliction is a life-long problem or purely due to the clearly-referenced drugs he is offered (and takes) in the film, I couldn't tell you but his possible schizophrenia certainly needs to be brought to light and not treated like it's normal for kids to be thinking and behaving this way. Sure, this film did bring me a few laughs here and there, but I was constantly on edge for the next creepy/controversial/worrying thing to appear on the screen. Not recommended for children. Or adults. Or anyone.
