Like all of Melissa McCarthy's collaborations with her husband, director Ben Falcone, The Boss is a vehicle for one of her cartoonish character playing around in an unreal world that allows for jokey nonsense. If one expects just that The Boss is pretty funny but it can be difficult to overlook the limited plot there just to service the ridiculousness.
When it comes to the emotional climax of the movie, though, McCarthy nails the moment.
