Review of The Boss (2016) by Jon E — 19 Jun 2016
Although Melissa McCarthy employs her usual comedic charm, it simply isn't quite enough to rescue this feature from the grasp of predictability and mediocrity. The story arc is at points distasteful and the viewer can quite easily anticipate the plot from the very beginning.
McCarthy should however be commended for her performance. She delivers ample laughs and as ever portrays the funny woman well - it's just a shame that she seems to offer up the same kind of persona in every film with very little variation other than a different wig. She performs brilliantly - but the viewer knows exactly what to expect from McCarthy.
The opening sequence is cringeworthy, as is the final 20 minutes. That said, there are some scenes with excellent potential. It does however seem that without McCarthy to support proceedings, this film would have been a complete disaster. With an unclear and confused core message, it would not be a loss if you happened to miss out on watching this feature.
