Review of The Boss (2016) by Prasad P — 21 Jul 2016
The superb Melissa McCarthy is, well, superb in this rather insipid comedy that puts her in-the-zone brand of humour in a film that fails to serve to her unique strengths. Directed by her husband Ben Falcone, the movie tells the story of Michelle Darnell, a super successful cut-throat entrepreneur thrown in prison for insider trading on a tip by her formerly jilted rival Renault (a hilariously jealous Peter Dinklage).
Once out, she is forced to rebuild her life by seeking help from former employee Clare (Kristen Bell) and her daughter - leading to an utterly predictable storyline propping up the need for family. All the usual McCarthy boxes are checked here.
Brash improvisation, creative use of invective, aggression disguised as hilarity are all here, but don't serve a larger narrative with any discernible purpose. Instead, what we're left with is a lukewarm slice of diaphanous funny that stands up solely due to the Melissa McCarthy touch.
And that is just not enough.
