Review of The Borderlands (2014) by Leigh W — 18 Apr 2014
THE BORDERLANDS begins as a fairly conventional - though interesting enough - found footage chiller before transitioning into something a bit more unique. We're presented with a trio of compelling leads (one is a particular goofball who contributes a good deal of effective humor to the movie), and there is some surprisingly good character work/writing to found here, and the actors do a very solid job.
The storyline is pretty standard stuff, punctuated by some nicely spooky moments (and aided by some truly eerie sound design for the supernatural goings on), until we get into the third act, which nearly elevates the entire movie because of how scary it is.
It still succumbs to the problem that most found footage movies have, which is to say it basically just ends without much fanfare, but it most certainly does leave a frightening impression on its audience.
