Review of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009) by Ryan O — 22 Jul 2010
The original Boondock Saints is a brilliant piece of action film making that became an indie classic, filling to the brim with an energy unmatched in many indie action films. Conversely, its sequel is decent, but doesnt quite stand up to the original.
I liked this sequel for the entertainment value despite some scenes that seemed to go on for a long time with dialogue that was overly written. With that being said, you cant take this one too seriously, and the set-up is believable and tolerable, but the writing itself, compared to the first is weak and was merely an attempt to recreate the success of the first film with little success.
I loved seeing these characters again in a new story line that bring the boys back to Boston seeking revenge for the death of a cherished priest.
If you were a fan of the first one, dont expect to be blown away by this utterly soft sequel, but dont write it off as trash either. Its worth a viewing and I suspect, may not be as rewarding on subsequent viewings like its predecessor.
I wouldnt be surprised if we see a third Boondock Saints movie in the future, but considering that it took almost 10 years to bring this sequel, I wouldnt hold your breath for too long.
I'll say, proceed with caution. Fans of the first will eat this one up, but will most likely walk away disappointed. All the actors from the first film are here, its just a shame that they didnt have more to work with.
