Review of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009) by Dian Maya L — 06 Aug 2010

*Sigh* Troy Duffy, what have you done? What is this? I really don't know what to think... okay, let me start by saying I'm a big fan of the original. It was funny, action-packed, and had some great music! This sequel, though, is a mess.

I'm not a big fan of Julie Benz. That accent? Awful. She was almost like a raunchy cartoon character. Speaking of cartoon characters, the cops are just laughable, and not in the good way. The dream sequence with Rocco seemed really out-of-place and inconsequential. The cut scenes for "the plans", especially the warehouse attack with the "Grindhouse" filter and the loft attack with Cowgirl Benz, were just awful. There were some moments where I just groaned in disappointment.

...which is a big shame because I loved the last 20-30 minutes. There was some good suspense leading up to the reveal of "the Old Man." The final shoot out was the best in the movie. The cops were basically out of the picture, as was Benz, and Connolly got to shine. I really liked the kid that played the young il Duce, too.

However, overall, the film felt like Duffy was more interested in the reunion of his original cast than in the story, which is a shame, because it shows shades of a damn good movie. Recommended for fans of the original, but don't get your expectations too high.
