Review of The Book Thief (2013) by Kelly O — 26 Feb 2014
This movie was the worst. I've read the book more than 5 times, and too much information was cut out. Sophie Nelisse was barely acting, she was reciting lines. In one of the ending scenes when Liesel was extremely emotional, you saw nothing.
I feel like she didn't read the book at all, and someone older with a better understanding of Nazi Germany and someone who actually knows what was happening. Rush and Watson were good, but the director cut out a lot of key characterization.
Death, who was quite comical in the book and was supposed to be the narrator for the movie as well, had about 3-5 lines throughout the entire movie. This movie was just terrible, we needed an actual person who is familiar with Nazi Germany and wasn't afraid to show it, perhaps Spielberg.
