Review of The Book Thief (2013) by Eyal D — 11 Feb 2014
It is possible to appreciate THE BOOK THIEF and yet not love it, not even enjoy much of it. Not that there's any joy in WWII themed Jews-in-Peril-under-Nazi-Occupation movies. But this particular one, based on the best selling novel, desperately & shamelessly wants to tag at your heart with a romanticized view of hardship.
It's slick & glossy, it includes another solid Geoffrey Rush performance and features the young, appealing Sophie Nelisse (a Montrealer previously known for Monsieur Lazhar). It even has yet another Oscar nominated John Williams score.
So what's lacking? Perhaps authenticity and grit. You have to be cynical to dislike THE BOOK THIEF yet intelligent enough to realize that it could have been far more credible.
