Review of The Book Thief (2013) by Paige H — 15 Aug 2014
This movie is an emotional rollercoaster, in a good way. You get to see the other side of the picture during World War II. You see kids singing gleefully songs for Hitler and the Nazi cause. The innocence of children, can you really blame them for what they are taught in school?
It's like when I grew up, they talked about Christopher Columbus as a true American hero, so I believed it. Now days, people's opinions on Columbus are mixed, some good, some bad, some in-between.
But let's not get completely in love for Nazis, you would have to be a cruel person to do that. And the main characters in this movie dislike Hitler. So it's not like a Nazi love fest. But I just think it's cool to see both sides of things.
I myself, love books. So I have a connection to Liesel, played by Sophie Nelisse in a heartwarming performance. I don't understand all the negative reviews of this movie. People saying it treats death rudely and commonplace. But that's the way war is. So to me, it is accurately portrayed.
To me the acting is solid, and so is the plot. Geoffrey Rush plays Hans, and stands out in the movie because of his love for Liesel and his awesome acting. To me this is a solid period piece, and I know Nazi Germany has been overdone a million times over. But this story's heart and soul make it a winner.
It's not "Schidnler's List" by any means, but then again it's no "Nazi's at the Center of the Earth" either. Far from it. But If you want an emotional movie with good acting and a great plot, than this movie is right up your alley.
