Review of The Book Thief (2013) by Constantine M — 19 Jan 2015
I read the book, and then watched this movie. I understand that with time constraints, it was difficult to follow this book to a T, however, I was very disappointed in some liberties taken with the plot.
One that comes to mind is the representation of Liesel and Rudy's relationship, especially concerning the thieving of things. Another is the way that Liesel is given her journal. It was important to the symbolism of the book that the journal be given by Frau Hermann, not Max.
These are just a few abbreviated examples among several others. Beyond the discrepancies between book and film, the plot of the movie itself seemed to be far too rushed, lending little explanation as to why certain events were happening, and of their importance.
Overall, a poor film.
